What Is A/B Testing?

At its core, A/B testing is exactly what it sounds like: you have two versions of an element (A and B) and a metric that defines success. To determine which version is better, you subject both versions to experimentation simultaneously. In the end, you measure which version was more successful and select that version for real-world use. This is similar to the experiments you did in Science 101. Remember the experiment in which you tested various substances to see which supports plant growth and which suppresses it. At different intervals, you measured the growth of plants as they were subjected to different conditions, and in the end you tallied the increase in height of the different plants.

A/B testing on the Web is similar. You have two designs of a website: A and B. Typically, A is the existing design (called the control), and B is the new design. You split your website traffic between these two versions and measure their performance using metrics that you care about (conversion rate, sales, bounce rate, etc.). In the end, you select the version that performs best.

It's all about the Brief

It all starts with 'Defined Goals'. You want to be taken seriously, right? All good projects start with a good brief. If you put a few hours into writting a brief for your web project you can be sure that developers like myself will be more than happy to invest a few hours of our time to discuss your project, help define the scope and submit an accurate proposal.Every website has a goal or purpose. The first part of your brief needs to determine the goals of your project and everything from there on needs to contribute to the achievement of those goals. The definition of the project goals is broken into 4 parts. The first 3 are the most important. 1. Your business goals. 2. The goals of your website in relation to your business goals. 3. The goals of your site visitors. 4. The project goals Here is a real world example from a recent client. Company Goals XYZ Organisation (inc.) is a not-for-profit body that represents and promotes the interests of ABCXYZ professionals in the community. Website Goals The goal of this site is to; * Sell XYZ Organisation (inc.) memberships online. * Provide a platform to promote members and the activities of the organisation. * Provide a method for visitors to locate members that match their needs and become potential clients. Visitors Goals Visitors will be accessing the site either; * As an XYZ with the goal of expanding their contacts and network. * As a potential client looking for the services of an ABCXYZ. Project Goals The goal of this project is to; * Redesign and modernise the existing website. * Implement a searchable directory of ABCXYZ professionals giving members an avenue to promote their services. * Setup on online payment gateway and automate the sign up process. * Provide other community based website feature to encourage user interaction and the sale of memberships. This kind of brief will get you what you wanted from the onset, and most important relay that information to your web developer so everyone is on the same page.

The Halo Effect

Check out this article by the ABC. "Internet users quick to judge". It outlines a theory that I have been an advocate of for quite some time. It's the theory that people indeed DO judge a book by it's cover. The article states that internet users are so quick to judge a site that they can rate a sites visual appeal in 1/20th of a second. Good visual design causes an emotional reaction. And that initial positive reaction influences subsequent judgements. This is called the Halo Effect. With such a plethora of sites on the web and the speed of internet connections today, people are jumping from one site to the next, to the next, to the next. Hitting a site and exiting within seconds and making up their minds about the content without even reading the front page. We all do this. I recently had this discussion with a client who was worried about customers on dial-up connections. He wanted to keep the visuals to a minimum so pages loaded quickly. It's a fair point and it's easy to understand this position. But, the majority of web users today are on modern computers, they have broadband and they expect a better internet experience. Unfortunately, if the visuals don't cut it then your site is not doing anything to promote the quality of your company or products. Still, content is King when it comes to a successful website. But, to get people to stay, read it and give it credibility you need to have very good graphic design.
